Winter’s Bone: Release date, soundtrack, SXSW screenings

Looks like Winter’s Bone will be released in the U.S. sooner rather than later.

Winter’s Bone, recipient of the 2010 Sundance Film Festival’s Dramatic Competition Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, will get a June 2010 release from Roadside Attractions. [Pretty-Scary.net]

This is also confirmed on the film’s official page: www.wintersbonemovie.com.

For a preview of the Winter’s Bone soundtrack, you can visit KSPR.com. They have a video of the band Dirt Road Delight performing a song from the movie. The song is also available on the band’s site: www.dirtroaddelight.com.

The screening schedule for the SXSW festival (Austin, March) is posted here.

Finally, the film also got several new distributors across Europe. From Variety:

Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone” has been acquired by Paradiso for Benelux, Pretty Pictures for France, Look Now for Switzerland, Lusomundo for Portugal and Vivarto for Poland, with deals currently being finalized for Scandinavian distribution. [Variety]

Good news all around.

Oliver Sherman going to Berlinale

Looks like Oliver Sherman will be getting some promotion at the Berlin Film Festival, too. I can’t find anything about it being screened there (it’s still in post-production), but the film will be part of the Canada at Berlinale 2010 program and probably looking for a European distributor.

The film now also has a page on The Film Works’ site.

Berlinale kicks off on February 11. Winter’s Bone has its first screening on Feb. 16.

Baryo updates

Just a quick note to say that Baryo started filming the other day. You can follow updates on the Baryo production blog or, if you’re on Twitter, you can follow me there to be alerted whenever they post an update. (I fed their blog to Twitterfeed the other week, so it automatically tweets every new post.)

Other than that, two new interviews with Chris Cooper showed up online in the last few days. The first one was with the local Inquirer:

How did you prepare for your role here?

John provided me with a very thick academic account of the Philippine-American War. He also gives actors a two-page biography [of their] characters. It’s a great starting point.

What did you learn about your character?

My character is disgusted by [another character’s] interest in architecture in the Philippines. In real life, I’m a great fan of architecture. [Inquirer]

And he also briefly talked about his character in Baryo at Sundance, where he was promoting The Company Men with Tommy Lee Jones. It’s 14:50 minutes in and if you don’t want to be spoiled about The Company Men, skip everything between 14:00 and 14:50.

Winter’s Bone added to SXSW lineup

Winter’s Bone will be screened at the South by Southwest festival in Austin in March as part of the Festival Favorites program. If you’re thinking of going, the complete SXSW 2010 schedule will probably show up here one of these days. This year, the festival runs from March 12 to 21.

Before that, the film will have its European premiere at the Berlinale. Here are the dates and venues:

In the meantime, Winter’s Bone has also found an international distributor. Fortissimo Films has bought worldwide sales rights from Anonymous Content. From Screen Daily:

Starring Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes and Dale Dickey, Winter’s Bone will have its European premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, where it is screening in the Forum section and as a special presentation in Generations 14+.

Fortissimo chairman Michael J. Werner said: “As I was watching the film at an early morning screening in Sundance, I began to realize that I was seeing a real gem; masterfully directed, artfully written and beautifully acted.”

Producers Alix Madigan and Anne Rosellini added: “We are thrilled to be working with Fortissimo and to be in the company of the excellent films they represent.”
