John From Cincinnati is a drama created by David Milch and surf noir author Kem Nunn that aired on HBO from June 10 to August 12, 2007.
Set in Imperial Beach, California, the show revolves around the Yosts –a dysfunctional family of surfers – and their community. When a seemingly simple-minded stranger with supernatural abilities arrives to town, their lives and the lives of those around them begin to change.
Garret plays Dr. Michael Smith, the neurologist who treats the youngest Yost after a surfing accident and witnesses his miraculous recovery from apparent brain death.
Aired after The Sopranos series finale, John From Cincinnati had one of the highest rated pilots on HBO, but the viewership subsequently dropped and, even though ratings picked up toward the end, the show was cancelled after episode 10, the season one finale. It was released on DVD in April 2008.
Just north of the border, in a tired coastal town, live three generations of the Yosts, surfing royalty turned society misfits. The Yosts’ reign and reputation, once defined in the curl of a perfect wave, have been eroded by years of bad luck, addiction and hubris. But just as things are looking like they can’t get worse, a stranger named John arrives – and the Yosts’ banal existence is lifted into something profound, miraculous and, possibly, universal.
