OFFICIAL UK PREMIERE AT THE TIMES BFI LONDON FILM FESTIVAL, FRIDAY 16th OCTOBER 2009

The Road‘ is a post-apocalyptic dramatic thriller about a father and his son walking alone through burned America.

Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food–and each other.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from Cormac McCarthy (“No Country for Old Men”), “The Road” stars Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) and Academy Award winners Robert Duvall (Tender Mercies) and Charlize Theron (Monster). Guy Pearce and Kodi Smit McPhee also star. [Press release]

The Last House on the Left Q&A – Garret, Monica Potter & Wes Craven

The Last House on the Left Region 2 Blu-rayThe Last House on the Left will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in region 2 on October 19. British film site Stale Popcorn posted their Q&A sessions with Garret, Monica Potter and Wes Craven. Here is a snippet:

Q: How is Krug different in this movie to the villain in the 1972 version?

A: Times have changed, and I wanted my guy to be more of a rageaholic, without the drug influence. And the father angle is explored further in this movie as well.

Q: Krug must be one of the most horrific characters you have ever played.

A: Yes, but I also felt sorry for him. I know people who are angry at what life has handed them – albeit not to that extreme – and take it out on everyone around them.

Q: And it’s even more tragic here due to the fact that he also has a kid…

A: And a good kid who, despite Krug, is kind of normal and ultimately does what is right, so it’s tragic that he doesn’t have a proper father.

Q: So, your character is multi-layered then?

A: That’s what I liked about him. His complexity made my job interesting.

Q: It seems that as an actor you like to challenge yourself with very different roles, going from one extreme to another…

A: I know, but I thought that’s what we were supposed to do as actors: one day you are the king and the next you are the beggar. I feel a sense of accomplishment if I can pull off a character that is very far from me or from the last character I played. It’s important to me.

Q: When you think of a villain that has impressed you on screen, which film comes to mind?

A: I really like Terrence Malick’s BADLANDS because that villain – a serial killer – is very interesting.

Lie to Me: Interview with Monica Raymund

Garret Dillahunt,Monica Raymund,Lie to MeIGN talked to Monica Raymund (Ria Torres on Lie to Me) recently and she gave away a few details about the hostage episode. (Not necessarily the main reason I’m quoting her.)

Side note: the interview is dated Sept. 25 and episode 2 is now episode 4.

Spoilers below.

IGN: Can you talk at all about some of the storylines coming up?

Raymund:
Episode 1 we have Erika Christensen from Traffic. She’s a guest star and gives an incredible performance as a woman with multiple personality disorder. So that’s dramatic and fun! Then we have Garret Dillahunt who comes in episode 2. He’s amazing. He’s one of my favorite actors, ever. And he takes me hostage and brings me into the company and takes everyone hostage. It provides for a very entertaining, action-packed episode. Then we go off to Mexico in another episode. I go with Lightman to Mexico, because he needs a Latina to help him… Who doesn’t?! [Laughs] And then we go to Vegas, where we will be near the poker world series tournament.

IGN: I wanted to ask you a bit more about that hostage episode, because I’d imagine Torres would be a bit cooler under pressure in that situation than most.

Raymund: She’s very cool. Obviously, with a gun to your head, you’re going to freak out a little bit. But she understands what she has to do. She understands that there’s lives at stake. So she just does what she needs to do, to make sure everybody is okay. So she just comes in and does her bit. And then a gun goes to Lightman’s head… and that’s where the story really takes off.

IGN: How was it working with Garret Dillahunt on that episode?

Raymund: It was great. I think he’s probably one of the most brilliant actors of our time. I have immense respect for him. [IGN.com, via LieToMeScoop.com]

Garret Dillahunt and Tim Roth in Lie to MeLooks like Garret won’t be holding Tim Roth hostage next week or the one after that either. LietoMeScoop.com has posted a press release for episode 2×03 (the one airing on Oct. 12) and it’s not “Honey,” but “Control Factor,” with Marc Blucas and Timothy Carhart guest starring.

No word yet on when “Honey” will air, but the promos Fox has been showing lately (below) have Garret in them so hopefully it won’t be a long wait.

Here is the press release for 2×03, just for reference:

“While on vacation in Mexico, Lightman and Emily become involved in the case of a missing American woman. Back home, Foster investigates tainted blood in D.C.-area hospitals with Lightman’s rival, Jack Rader (guest star Blucas), in the “Control Factor” episode of LIE TO ME airing Monday, Oct. 12 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (LTM-204) (TV-14 D, L)”

And the promos (surprisingly lacking in Buffy’s boyfriends):

Donal Logue cast in Oliver Sherman

Garret Dillahunt,Donal Logue,LifeDonal Logue will be joining Molly Parker and Garret on the set of Oliver Sherman when the film goes into production in October. He has been cast as Franklin Page, Sherman’s old war buddy and Irene’s husband. Now, they’re just looking for a baby to play the Pages’ younger kid.

Below is a snippet from the casting sides for Franklin, just for some backstory. It’s from pages 9 and 10 so it doesn’t spoil any plot points that aren’t mentioned in the synopsis, but if you don’t want to know anything about the characters either, you probably shouldn’t keep reading.

EXT. FRONT PORCH

Franklin and Sherman are seated on the porch steps with beers in hand – they’ve had a few now and Sherman seems to be loosening up, if only a touch.

SHERMAN
So how’d you end up around these parts?

FRANKLIN
Had a hard go of it, that first year out.
(holding up his beer)
Too much of this stuff. Always fleeing from one
town to the next. Guess I thought if I kept moving,
the past couldn’t take aim.

He sips.

FRANKLIN
Eventually, I wound up in a mill job around here.
I walk into the office that first day, and man oh man,
there she is. Irene. The first time I saw her I knew
she was the one I wanted to spend everything on — all
the money I’d saved, the experience I’d gained, the love
I’d never been able to give away. So I did.

SHERMAN
A wife and kids. Just like we used to talk about.
Dream about.

Franklin glances back into the house to make sure his wife isn’t listening in.

FRANKLIN
(hushed)
I don’t remember many dreams of domesticity, Sherman.
I remember us sitting around playing poker with girls
on our laps.

Sherman cracks a smile as he remembers fondly.

SHERMAN
You’re right, Frank. That’s right. You see any of them
boys anymore?

FRANKLIN
No, I’ve kind of lost touch, actually. You?

SHERMAN
Not much. Would see some at the hospital now and then.

The mood turns a bit solemn at the mention of the hospital.

FRANKLIN
How long were you in there?

Sherman says nothing for a second, then answers in a murmur:

SHERMAN
Oh, eleven, twelve months.

FRANKLIN
Has it really been five years already?

Sherman nods.

FRANKLIN
Man.

They sit in quiet.

FRANKLIN
Well, you know, I remember hearing once that everything
takes about five years. A serious illness, a broken heart,
you name it. Anything bad takes about five years to come
to terms with. I don’t know: maybe now, right now,
is your time.

Sherman mulls the notion over, then takes a swig of his beer.

SHERMAN
Maybe it is, Frank.
