The nominations were announced this morning by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television at simultaneous news conferences in Toronto and Montreal.

Rounding out the best picture race is the thriller “The Whistleblower” and the francophone comedy “Starbuck.” They earned six nominations apiece.

The Genie Awards will be held March 8 in Toronto and will be broadcast on CBC-TV.

The acting categories are studded with international stars.

Notables include Michael Fassbender, Michelle Williams, Viggo Mortensen, Vanessa Paradis and Rachel Weisz.
Fassbender is in the best actor race for his turn as Carl Jung in “A Dangerous Method.” Rivals include Garret Dillahunt, who plays a disillusioned war vet in “Oliver Sherman”; Scott Speedman, as the notorious Canadian bank robber in “Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster”; Montreal’s Patrick Huard, who plays a frequent sperm donor in “Starbuck”; and Algeria’s Mohamed Fellag, who stars as a sensitive school teacher in “Monsieur Lazhar.”

“Kidnapped” airs on October 4.

The first article about Any Day Now showed up on Hollywood News today. It has some new info about Garret’s character, the story and the producers, as well as the first production still from the film, with Garret and Alan Cumming (see Hollywood News). A few tidbits:

Set in the 1970s and inspired by a true story, the film chronicles a gay couple who take in a teenage boy with Down Syndrome who has been abandoned by his drug addicted mother. As the teen discovers the strong bonds of family for the first time in his life, disapproving authorities step in to tear the boy from the only stable environment he has ever known. As the gay men fight to adopt this extraordinary special needs child, they wage an unlikely and unforgettable battle against a system stacked against them.

“I’m a huge fan of the gritty, character-driven dramas that were made during the 1970?s,” said Fine . “’Any Day Now’ offers me an opportunity as a filmmaker to revisit that time period cinematically, address social issues that are just as relevant today as they were 35 years ago and explore unique characters who discover love in the most unlikely of places.”

Cumming plays Rudy Donatello, a brash, charismatic and world wise drag performer who makes the bold decision to take the abandoned child into his life. Dillahunt portrays Paul Fleiger, a closeted Deputy District Attorney, who risks his career to fight for the men he loves. Fisher plays a stern family court judge who is tasked with rendering a decision in the highly unconventional adoption case. And Any Day Now introduces Isaac Levya, an actor with Down Syndrome, who makes a stunning and remarkable film debut as Marco, a boy abandoned by his mother only to be taken in by two strangers who provide a safe, stable and loving home.

Actors Oscar Isaac, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, David Rasche, Kevin Corrigan, Garret Dillahunt, Bobby Moynihan, and Gillian Jacobs are all part of the recently wrapped “Revenge For Jolly!” directed by short filmmaker Chadd Harbold and starring Brian Petsos. (…)

A dramatic dark comedy, “Revenge For Jolly!” follows a man (Petsos) who, with the help of his cousin (Oscar Isaac), seeks to avenge the death of his beloved dog, who was killed under confusing and suspicious circumstances. The two men follow a series of clues in an attempt to track down the dog’s murderer, leaving a path of destruction in their wake.

With all these names, it’s probably safe to presume that many of these appearances amount to small roles or cameos.

In other news, Famlee has had a title change and is now called Any Day Now.

Garret will do another show with The Thrilling Adventure Hour folks on October 1.

Slightly OT at this point, but big congrats to the Alphas creative team on getting picked up for a second season! Syfy made the announcement earlier today.

And AOL TV has posted an exclusive clip from the Raising Hope DVD, a deleted scene with Garret and Lucas Neff:

The Daily Beast has a nice three-page interview with Alan Cumming, Garret’s co-star in the mystery movie set in the 1970s, filmed over the summer. On page three, he talks about being harassed by Cloris Leachman and mentions this:

The film I did this summer was with Garret Dillahunt. We played boyfriends in [Famlee] and we had such a laugh.

Here is the synopsis, from Cumming’s site:

Famlee was written and directed by Travis Fine and is the story of a gay couple in the 1970s and their struggle to keep custody of a down syndrome child who they have become fathers to.

And here is another bit from a casting call posted at FamleeMovieCasting.com:

In 1975 Marco is the neglected son of a junkie mother. When the mother is arrested, charged and incarcerated, Marco is befriended and taken in by his neighbor, a flamboyant female impersonator who gets Marco the care and education that he has been missing. The film is a fictional story of a real account. Marco’s speech needs to be good enough to be understood by strangers, which doesn’t always work in his favor, due to the potty mouth he has developed while living with his mother.

Isaac Levya plays the son and Frances Fisher is also in the film. She mentioned it on Twitter back in June.

Elsewhere, Fox Broadcasting has uploaded a short interview with Garret and Martha on YouTube (after the teaser), in which they give away a few details about season two:

Syfy has released the promotional pics from Garret’s episode of Alphas.

Amigo finally opens in a limited release in the U.S. tomorrow. You can find the list of theatres here. The film will also be shown at the Albuquerque Film Festival tonight.

There are a couple of great interviews with John Sayles at NY Mag and Twitch Film. A couple of snippets:

Where did you base your characters on?
Chris (Cooper)’s character was based on someone very specific named ‘Hell Roaring Jake Smith’ who was famous for telling his subordinates, “I want you to make this place howling wilderness. The more you kill and burn, the more you will please me. And I want you to kill every one out of ten Filipinos who are capable of carrying arms,” which meant anybody older than 10. So yes, we had some hard-ass characters like the Colonel who had bullet in his hip from the Civil War who were useful in that kind of military operation. The Mayor is based on hundreds of other mayors that I read about, who got killed by one side or the other. Garret Dillahunt’s character (Lt. Compton) is very much based on the soldiers’ letters to home, who might have liked the army life but had very mixed feelings about their mission. Garret asked me about the character. He asked if he could play a character who likes being in charge but doesn’t really know where to lead them. …
How is Amigo being distributed?
The supportive mid-90s to early 2000 independent film environment doesn’t exist anymore. Even the movies with big names don’t get distributed and go directly to video. They don’t want to take the gamble with dramas. It’s either comedies or comic book superhero movies. The 30 plus weeks in the theater days are over. It’s all about opening weekend where they recoup the money and the 2-3 weeks run at best. For smaller movies, studios can’t take their chances. Even if they do put up the money to make it, they ask you to spend your money for the promotion and distribution. So I’m going back to what I did with couple of my first films. I made 12 prints of the film (10 on film and 2 digital) and hit 12 mainstream theaters throughout the country where there are large Filipino-American population. If it does well, then we will make more prints and art house theaters distribution will follow.

He talks about Raising Hope, the babies, Terminator, and the four movies he has been working on over the summer, among other things. Summer movie #3 is still a mystery, but there are a couple of new tidbits in the interview that I don’t think he’s mentioned on Twitter. Alan Cumming being one of them.

Garret Dillahunt is set to co-star in the indie “The Boys of Abu Ghraib,” which Luke Moran is directing and producing. Story follows a U.S. soldier at the infamous Iraq prison who befriends a detainee accused of murder. Production is about to start in New Mexico.

The film has an official Facebook page and Moran also created a page on Kickstarter last month that has some more details about the film.

This is a unique and important story that we’re extremely passionate about. Based on the true events that occurred at Abu Ghraib in 2003, the film is about a group of young soldiers thrown into a hellish environment, with little but each other to help them cope with the challenges they face. (…)

This film demonstrates how a deplorable environment can drive a person with good intentions to the breaking point. The story is told from the soldier’s point of view, focusing on the psychological, rather than the political aspects of war.
